Hillside Boutique Hotel Baku Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Hillside Boutique Hotel Baku? Walking up to this unassuming building on Jafarov Gardashlari street, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. I mean, the street itself is pretty quiet – which actually turned out to be perfect because you’re close enough to everything but not dealing with the chaos of downtown traffic all night. But the moment I stepped inside, it was clear someone really cared about this place. The lobby has this warm, lived-in feel that’s nothing like those sterile chain hotels, and the staff actually remembered my name by day two (not just because they had to check my passport constantly, but genuinely remembered).
The location is sort of brilliant if you think about it. You’re in Sabayil, which locals will tell you is one of the better neighborhoods – close enough to walk to the Old City when you feel like exploring the cobblestone maze, but far enough from the tourist crowds that you can grab breakfast at the little bakery around the corner without fighting through selfie sticks. I spent most mornings walking down toward the Caspian, which is maybe a 10-minute stroll, and honestly the sea breeze hits different when you’re not sharing the moment with a hundred other people. The rooms themselves surprised me too – nothing fancy, but everything worked properly (you’d be amazed how rare that is sometimes), and the beds were actually comfortable. The windows are well-sealed, so even though you’re in the city, I slept better than I expected.
What really sold me on this place was the attention to small things that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The shower had proper water pressure, the Wi-Fi didn’t cut out every five minutes, and when I mentioned I was trying to figure out the best way to get to Gobustan, the front desk guy – Rashad, I think his name was – actually drew me a little map and called ahead to confirm the marshrutka schedule. That 9.8 rating makes sense now. It’s not trying to be the fanciest place in Baku, but it gets the fundamentals right in a way that makes you feel like you’re staying somewhere that gives a damn about your experience. Plus, and this might sound weird, but the whole place just smells clean without that overpowering chemical smell some hotels use to mask problems. If you’re looking for marble lobbies and room service, this isn’t your spot – but if you want a genuine place to stay while you explore Baku without breaking the bank, you’ll probably end up recommending it to other travelers like I’m doing right now.

Amazing location. Definitely the prettiest part of the city! Look and comfort is excellent! I would really say hillside is an exceptional hotel for its price range! I am super happy to have booked it especially as a solo female traveler. I felt super comfortable! The staff is also very kind. (The doors are ,next to the key card, physically lockable which was a big plus for me). Overall VERY pleasant experience!
What could be improved: I think Russian, Turkish, Arabic is definitely more commonly spoken (in the whole of Azerbaijan). So I would keep that in mind when communicating with staff. But it wasn’t a big issue. They are very kind people who want to help out!Superb – Zdeněk from Czech Republic – 11 July 2025 (9/10)
