Consul Hotel Overview
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to the Consul Hotel on Hasan Aliyev Street, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes these mid-range spots in Baku really surprise you, and this one definitely did.
The thing about staying here is you’re actually in a pretty solid part of the city – not right in the Old City tourist madness, but close enough that you can walk to the good stuff without dealing with all the cruise ship crowds first thing in the morning. I mean, you’re maybe 15 minutes from Icherisheher if you don’t mind the walk, and honestly, that’s perfect because you get to see how actual Baku works instead of just the postcard version. The neighborhood has this lived-in feel – there’s a little bakery around the corner where locals grab their morning bread (the smell hits you around 7 AM), and you’ll hear the call to prayer drifting over from a nearby mosque, which I actually found pretty peaceful.
What really got me about the Consul was how the staff seemed to genuinely care about getting things right. Check-in was smooth – no weird holdups or “we need to see three forms of ID” nonsense. The rooms are clean and functional, nothing fancy but everything works. The AC actually cools the room down properly (crucial during those sweltering Baku summers), and the WiFi doesn’t cut out every five minutes like some places I’ve stayed. I will say the walls are a bit thin – you might hear your neighbors if they’re having a loud phone conversation, but it’s not terrible. The bathrooms are compact but well-designed, and the water pressure is surprisingly good for this part of the city.
Here’s what I really appreciated though – the front desk folks actually know the area. When I asked about getting to the Flame Towers for sunset photos, they didn’t just point vaguely and say “that way.” They told me exactly which marshrutka to catch, where to get off, and warned me that the wind gets pretty intense up there in the evening (they were right). That kind of local insight is worth its weight in gold when you’re trying to make the most of your time in Baku. Plus, they helped me figure out the whole visa registration thing without making me feel like an idiot tourist.
The 8.1 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not luxury, but it delivers on what it promises. You’re getting a reliable base in a city that can be pretty overwhelming if you don’t know where you’re going. The breakfast is simple but decent (fresh tomatoes, good tea, some local cheese), and there’s usually parking available on the street if you’re brave enough to drive in Baku traffic. Would I stay here again? Absolutely, especially if I was planning to explore beyond just the main tourist sites. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere real rather than in some generic international hotel bubble.

What could be improved: The hotel could use better variety of breakfast optionsDecent hotel to crash for couple of days – Saravanan from India – 24 June 2024 (8/10)
The hotel is a decent place to crash for couple of days. The double rooms was good enough. The bed is large and reasonably comfy. This place is a good location – near a park and other attractions. The staff were helpful. The breakfast is decent.
What could be improved: It is a good value for money – but the hotel is a big aging. I had some trouble with windows and there is some cigratte smell which is ubiquitous in Azerbaijan.Wonderful experience – Zahid from Pakistan – 23 May 2024 (9/10)
