You know what caught me off guard about Bay View Apartment? The name’s actually spot-on – I mean, you really do get this lovely glimpse of the Caspian from the windows, which honestly surprised me since Tabriz Street isn’t exactly waterfront property. But there you are, craning your neck just a bit from the upper floors and boom, there’s that shimmer of blue between the Soviet-era buildings.

The location is pretty brilliant if you know Baku at all. Tabriz Street puts you right in that sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk to the Old City (maybe 15 minutes if you don’t mind the hill), but you’re not dealing with all the tourist chaos and inflated prices. There’s this little bakery two blocks down that does incredible qutab in the mornings – I stumbled across it by accident and ended up going back three times. The apartment itself feels more like staying at someone’s well-kept place rather than a sterile hotel room. The furniture’s a bit of a mix-and-match situation, but it works somehow, and everything’s genuinely clean. I appreciated that they didn’t go overboard trying to be fancy – just good basics done right. The shower actually has decent pressure (trust me, this matters in Baku), and the kitchen area is functional if you want to grab groceries from the Green Bazaar and cook something simple.

What really sold me was how quiet it gets at night. During the day, sure, there’s the usual city sounds drifting up, but once evening settles in, it’s surprisingly peaceful. The neighbors seem to be mostly locals living their regular lives, which I actually preferred to being surrounded by other tourists. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that bureaucratic nightmare you sometimes hit in this part of the world. The host actually knew the neighborhood well enough to give proper directions (not just “it’s near the center” like some places), and mentioned which marshrutka routes work best for getting around. Honestly, for a 3-star spot, it punches above its weight. You’re not getting marble bathrooms or 24-hour room service, but you are getting a genuine slice of Baku life with that bonus water view and a location that makes exploring the city actually enjoyable rather than exhausting.
