Sunday Palace Hotel Overview

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to the Sunday Palace Hotel in Kichik Qala – honestly, the name made me think it might be one of those overly fancy places that’s all show and no substance. But walking through those doors, I actually got it. There’s this immediate sense that someone really thought about what travelers want, not just what looks good in photos.

The location is pretty brilliant, actually. You’re right in Sabayil, which means you can walk to the Old City walls in about ten minutes (I timed it), but you’re not dealing with the tourist chaos that comes with staying right in Icherisheher. The staff at check-in seemed genuinely happy to see guests – not that practiced hotel smile, but like they actually enjoy their jobs. My room faced away from the main street, which I was grateful for around 7 AM when the morning traffic starts picking up. The beds are properly firm (thank god), and they’ve got these blackout curtains that actually work – something you don’t realize you miss until you’re trying to sleep past sunrise in a city that gets bright early.

What really won me over was the attention to details that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The shower pressure is excellent, there’s enough outlets near the bed for your phone and whatever else, and the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a jet engine. I mean, these aren’t glamorous things, but they’re the difference between a good stay and constantly being slightly annoyed. The breakfast spread is solid – not huge, but everything’s fresh and there’s proper coffee, not just instant. You can tell they know their guests are a mix of business travelers and tourists because there’s options for both the grab-and-go crowd and people who want to linger. The location means you’re close enough to walk to the Flame Towers if you want that classic Baku skyline shot, but far enough that you’re not paying premium prices for every meal. There’s a decent kebab place literally around the corner that the front desk recommended – turns out half their staff eats there regularly, which is always a good sign. Honestly, for a four-star place, it punches above its weight. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Baku, but it nails the fundamentals and adds just enough personality to feel welcoming rather than corporate.

It you're looking to unwind, this is the place. We barely heard a sound during the night and the bed was like sleeping on a cloud. The staff respected our privacy but were available when needed.

Warm welcome at the front desk made us feel instantly comfortable. They offered maps, restaurant suggestions, and even let us check in early without extra charge. It's the kind of olace where hospitality still matters.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The room was cozy and well-kept, with a lovely personal touch in the decor. The staff went above and beyond to make sure I felt at home, offering local tips and even arranging transport when needed. Breakfast was freshly prepared each day, with a good selection

  • Exceptional – Olga from Russia – 22 February 2025 (10/10)

We spent a wonderful few days at this hotel with friends. The rooms are cozy and clean, everything is thought out to the smallest detail. The staff is very friendly and always ready to help. The breakfast was delicious and varied, especially the fresh products. The location is perfect: a quiet area, but still close to the city center. We will definitely come back!

  • Exceptional – Vera from Russia – 17 December 2024 (10/10)

The hotel was in a prime location, close to all the major attractions. Breakfast was a feast, with a wide variety of delicious options to choose from. I can't wait to stay here again

  • Disappointing – Gopal from India – 6 November 2024 (4/10)

Please don't suggest this type hotel

What could be improved: Small room
    Not careful

  • You can find better places and nicer people! – Daniela from Romania – 1 September 2024 (7/10)

Located in the old city (with narrow streets like a labyrinth but Google maps helps a lot), very close to main sites, restaurants, metro station, good wi-fi connection, good enough breakfast included, large room with all the facilities in description.

What could be improved: Unfortunately, the man who was at the reception desk when I checked-in was very rude and tried to make me pay in cash (a horrible exchange rate, of course) saying that the POS didn't work. It worked but not contactless, that was the only problem. So, pay attention to those who try to fool you in a way or another. I was given a room on the top floor, no elevator, hotter than you may think but AC worked very well. When I checked out, at 5 am, a man went to the room and again tried to make me pay for….the second TV remote control!!!! Of course, I had only ONE , why should I need two???? I have never had such problems before. On the other hand, in 7 days, nobody cleaned the room or even took the garbage out. Maybe I should have asked to but it's not normal for a 4* hotel. All in all, I kindly advise the manager of the hotel to train the staff of the hotel whose behaviour is much worse than expected.
