Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Square Boutique Hotel, I wasn’t expecting much from the outside. It’s tucked away on Rasul Rza street in Sabayil, which honestly took me a minute to find even with GPS (you know how those narrow Baku streets can be). But once you step inside, there’s this immediate shift from the bustling city energy to something more… refined, I guess? The lobby has this warm, understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard – think clean lines with just enough character to remind you you’re not in some cookie-cutter chain hotel.

What really got me was how the staff actually seemed to know the neighborhood. When I asked about getting to the Old City, the desk clerk didn’t just point me toward a tourist map – he told me about the shortcut through the small park that locals use, and mentioned which café nearby makes the best plov if I got hungry wandering around. The rooms themselves are solid – nothing groundbreaking, but everything works properly, which honestly is more than I can say for some places I’ve stayed in Baku. The beds are comfortable enough that I actually slept through the early morning call to prayer from the nearby mosque (though light sleepers might want to pack earplugs just in case). I mean, the bathrooms are compact but well-designed, and there’s decent water pressure, which – if you’ve traveled in this part of the world – you know isn’t always a given.

What I really appreciated was the location’s sweet spot between being accessible and not being right in the middle of tourist chaos. You’re close enough to walk to Fountain Square when you want that energy, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with crowds every time you step outside. The Caspian Sea views from some of the upper floors are actually pretty spectacular at sunset – nobody mentioned that when I booked, so it was a nice surprise. Parking can be a bit tricky during busy periods (there’s street parking, but it fills up fast), so if you’re renting a car, maybe give yourself some extra time. The whole experience felt like staying somewhere that locals might actually recommend to their visiting friends, rather than just another place that shows up first in booking searches. For the price point and the genuine hospitality, it’s the kind of place I’d definitely come back to – which, coming from someone who usually tries different hotels each trip, is saying something.
