Premier Old Gates Hotel Overview
You know what struck me first about the Premier Old Gates Hotel? It’s actually tucked into this narrow street in Sabayil that feels completely separate from the main tourist chaos, but you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Old City walls. Kichik Gala Street itself is one of those cobblestone lanes where you’ll hear elderly locals chatting from their balconies in the evenings – honestly, it’s the kind of authentic Baku neighborhood experience most visitors never stumble upon.
The hotel itself has this interesting mix going on where they’ve clearly put effort into modernizing without losing that sense of place. I mean, the lobby isn’t going to wow anyone, but the rooms are surprisingly well-appointed for a 4-star in this part of town. What I really appreciated was the attention to soundproofing – considering you’re in the heart of the old quarter, you’d expect street noise, but honestly, once you close those windows, it’s remarkably quiet. The staff genuinely seems to know the area inside and out, which makes a difference when you need restaurant recommendations that aren’t total tourist traps. They pointed me toward this incredible plov place about three blocks away that I never would’ve found otherwise.
Here’s the thing about staying in Sabayil – you’re positioned perfectly for exploring both old and new Baku without feeling like you’re staying in a museum or a sterile business district. From the Premier Old Gates, you can walk to Icherisheher (the Old City) before the tour groups arrive, then easily catch a taxi to the Flame Towers or the waterfront when you want that modern Baku experience. The neighborhood itself comes alive around sunset when families start their evening strolls, and there’s something really genuine about watching daily life unfold from your hotel window. Sure, the building shows its age in small ways – the elevator’s a bit temperamental, and some of the bathroom fixtures could use updating – but that 8.1 rating feels about right. It’s not luxury, but it’s solid, well-located, and run by people who actually care about giving you a real taste of the city rather than just a place to sleep between tourist sites.
