You know what caught me off guard about the Passage Hotel? I wasn’t expecting much from its spot on Nizami Street – I mean, it’s right in the thick of Baku’s main pedestrian drag where things can get pretty hectic. But honestly, once you’re inside, the street noise just melts away. The lobby has this understated elegance that feels authentically Azerbaijani without trying too hard, if that makes sense. I actually ended up spending way more time there than I planned, just people-watching through the windows and nursing coffee.

The location is genuinely perfect for exploring old Baku on foot. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Icherisheher (the Old City walls), and all those little carpet shops and tea houses are right at your doorstep. What I really appreciated – and this is something you only notice when you’re actually staying somewhere – is how easy it is to duck back to your room when you need a break from sightseeing. No dealing with taxis or figuring out the metro system. The front desk staff actually knows the neighborhood, too. When I asked about finding a good plov place that wasn’t touristy, they didn’t just point me toward the hotel restaurant but gave me specific directions to this little spot three blocks over where locals actually eat.

The rooms themselves are solid for a four-star – nothing that’ll blow your mind, but everything works and the beds are comfortable enough that I wasn’t thinking about them (which is exactly what you want, honestly). The bathrooms are well-maintained, though the water pressure varies depending on what floor you’re on. I was on the third floor and it was fine, but I heard someone mention the top floors can be a bit weak. Check-in was smooth, no drama with credit cards or deposits like I’ve had at some places in the region. The 8.2 rating feels about right – it’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Baku, but it delivers on the basics really well. If you’re the type who wants to be in walking distance of everything that matters in the old part of the city, and you don’t need a pool or fancy spa services, this place just makes sense. Plus, honestly, you’ll probably spend most of your time exploring anyway.
