Old Town Soffia Hotel Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Old Town Soffia Hotel feels like stepping into a well-kept secret in the heart of Baku‘s historic district. The building itself has this charming old-world character that you don’t find in the newer hotels scattered around the city. I mean, you’re literally staying in the Old City — Icherisheher — which is pretty incredible when you think about it. The lobby isn’t huge or flashy, but there’s something genuinely welcoming about the place that puts you at ease right away.

Location Magic

Honestly, the location is what makes this four-star hotel really shine. You’re on Ilyas Efendiyev Street, which means you can walk to the Maiden Tower in about three minutes — I timed it. The cobblestone streets, ancient walls, and those narrow alleyways that wind through the UNESCO World Heritage site are right outside your door. What’s great is that while you’re in the thick of all the historical sites, you’re also just a short walk from the Caspian Sea waterfront. The couples who stay here seem to get it — there’s something romantic about wandering these ancient streets together, especially in the evening when the tour groups have gone home.

The Rooms

My room was on the third floor, and I’ll be honest — it wasn’t the largest space I’ve ever stayed in, but it felt thoughtfully designed. The windows looked out over the old city walls, which was pretty spectacular, especially at sunset. The bed was comfortable enough, and the bathroom was modern without feeling out of place in the historic setting. You know what I appreciated? The air conditioning actually worked well, which isn’t always a given in these older buildings during Baku’s hot summers. The Wi-Fi was solid too, though I spent most of my time exploring rather than being glued to my phone.

Exploring the Neighborhood

Being right in the Old City means you’re surrounded by centuries of history, but it also means you’re close to some excellent local spots that most tourists miss. There’s this little tea house just around the corner where locals actually hang out — not just a tourist trap. The restaurant scene in the immediate area is pretty good too, with everything from traditional Azerbaijani cuisine to more international options within walking distance. I found myself just wandering the streets after dinner, discovering little courtyards and architectural details that you’d never notice if you were just visiting for a few hours.

Why Guests Love It

The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay work, and they know the area well enough to give you real recommendations rather than just pointing you toward the obvious tourist spots. The hotel manages to feel authentic without being uncomfortable — you get that sense of staying somewhere with real character, but you’re not sacrificing modern conveniences. For couples especially, there’s something special about being able to step out into those ancient streets whenever you want, then retreat to a comfortable base when you need to recharge. It’s the kind of place where the location does most of the heavy lifting, but the hotel itself doesn’t let you down.
