You know what struck me first about this place on Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev Street? The building itself – it’s got this solid, reassuring presence that feels very Baku. I mean, you’re right in Sabayil, which honestly is about as central as you can get without being overwhelmed by the chaos. The street’s named after one of Azerbaijan’s oil barons from way back, and you can sort of feel that old-money atmosphere when you walk up to the entrance.

The apartment itself lives up to that luxury billing, though I’d say it’s more understated elegance than flashy five-star glitz. The spaces are genuinely spacious – not that cramped European luxury where you’re bumping into furniture every five minutes. What really gets me is the attention to details that actually matter: the water pressure is fantastic (crucial in Baku, trust me), the air conditioning works properly, and there’s proper blackout curtains for those ridiculously bright summer mornings when the sun bounces off the Caspian. The kitchen is fully kitted out, which is brilliant because honestly, sometimes you just want to grab fresh pomegranates from the local market and make your own breakfast instead of hotel dining room scrambled eggs for the third day running.

Location-wise, you’re walking distance from the Old City – maybe fifteen minutes if you take your time and don’t get distracted by the street art along the way. The Flame Towers are right there dominating the skyline, and you’ll probably find yourself photographing them from different windows at different times of day because the light changes everything. Here’s the thing though – and this is important – the street itself is relatively quiet despite being so central. You get the urban energy without the constant traffic noise that can drive you mental in some Baku neighborhoods. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle (it always is in this part of the city), but the hosts seem to have that sorted better than most places I’ve stayed. The building has this lovely courtyard area that feels like a little oasis, especially in the evening when the temperature drops and you can actually breathe again after those scorching summer days. I’d definitely stay here again, particularly if I was planning to explore both the historical bits and the modern Baku scene – you’re perfectly positioned for both, and the apartment feels like a proper home base rather than just somewhere to crash between sightseeing.

  What could be improved: It is scary to get to the apartment the moment I enter the main gate; the pillows and bath towels provided were below average in quality; the couch in the living room isn’t soft and comfortable; the bathroom shower doors get detached easily; the hair dryer is the smallest hair dryer I have seen in my life- it is far from being luxury as advertised.
