GM City Hotel Overview

Look, I’ll be straight with you about GM City Hotel – it’s one of those places that catches you off guard in the best way possible. When I first pulled up to Ahmad Rajabli Street, honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from the exterior. The building sits quietly among the residential blocks, and you might actually walk past it if you’re not paying attention. But once you step inside, there’s this immediate sense that someone here actually cares about the details.

The lobby has this warm, understated elegance that feels authentically Azerbaijani without being overly theatrical about it. You know what I mean? No fake carpet patterns trying too hard to scream “exotic” – just thoughtful touches that make sense. The staff genuinely seems to enjoy helping guests figure out the city, and they’ll give you the real scoop on where to grab proper dolma (not the touristy spots). I mean, the front desk manager spent twenty minutes drawing me a map to the best tea houses in the Old City, complete with warnings about which streets get crazy crowded during evening rush hour.

The rooms are solid – nothing Instagram-worthy, but everything works the way it should. The beds are actually comfortable (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms have decent water pressure, which… well, if you’ve traveled around this region, you know that’s not always guaranteed. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night. Ahmad Rajabli isn’t a main thoroughfare, so you’re not dealing with constant traffic noise, but you’re still close enough to walk to Fountain Square in about fifteen minutes. The air conditioning works properly too, which becomes pretty crucial during Baku’s summer months when the city turns into a bit of an oven.

Here’s the thing though – this isn’t a luxury resort, and it doesn’t pretend to be. The 4-star rating feels honest rather than inflated. You’ll find some minor wear around the edges, maybe a scuff on the hallway walls or a lobby chair that’s seen better days. But honestly? That just makes it feel more genuine. The breakfast is decent local fare – fresh bread, proper cheese, strong tea – and they don’t try to pass off some sad international buffet as “worldly cuisine.”

What really sold me on this place was its location relative to the rest of Baku. You’re tucked away from the main tourist chaos but close enough to everything that matters. The Heydar Aliyev Center is a quick taxi ride away, and you can easily walk to the Boulevard along the Caspian when you want that waterfront vibe. Plus, there’s actual neighborhood life happening around you – local bakeries, small shops, people going about their daily business rather than just catering to tourists.

The 7.2 rating makes perfect sense to me. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in Baku, but it delivers exactly what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need – a comfortable, honest place to rest your head while you explore a fascinating city that’s still figuring out its post-Soviet identity.

The hotel is good overall, the location is good, and it is easily accessible to all transportation, including buses, metro, and taxis. The Hotel staff are very much friendly. We arrived late at night and the room allotted to us first had a door lock issue, immediately they took action to fix it and allotted us a new room.
The breakfast is neat and good.
I need to mention the staff Raul, Ame̞n, Elgun, and Ali are very customer-oriented and friendly very much and ready to assist at any time.

What could be improved: One thing we need to mention is the transportation from the Airport is not included in the booking, we have to pay additionally.
