Ramada by Wyndham Baku Overview
You know what surprised me about the Ramada by Wyndham Baku? It’s actually right on Shikhov Beach, which honestly feels like a bit of a hidden gem compared to the chaos you get in central Baku. I mean, don’t get me wrong – the city center has its charm with all that oil money architecture, but sometimes you just want to hear waves instead of traffic, you know?
The thing is, this place sits in this interesting sweet spot where you’re technically still in the city (Sabayil district) but it feels like a proper beach resort. When I first pulled up, the lobby had that slightly over-polished feel that five-star hotels sometimes get – lots of marble and gold accents that scream “we’re fancy” – but the staff actually seemed to know what they were doing, which isn’t always a given. Check-in was smooth, and they speak decent English if your Azerbaijani is as terrible as mine. The rooms are… well, they’re nice enough, though honestly for a five-star property, I expected the bathrooms to be a bit more impressive. Clean, functional, but nothing that’ll blow your mind. What really works here is stepping out onto your balcony – assuming you get a sea-facing room, which you should absolutely request – and actually seeing the Caspian stretching out in front of you.
Here’s the thing about Shikhov Beach though: it’s not your pristine Caribbean paradise, but it’s got character. The water’s this deep blue-gray color that changes completely depending on the weather, and there’s usually a decent breeze coming off the water that makes even summer evenings bearable. The hotel’s beach area is well-maintained – they’ve got lounge chairs and umbrellas sorted out – but you’ll share the general coastline with locals, especially on weekends when families come out for picnics. I actually loved that authentic feel, but some travelers might find it less “exclusive” than they’re expecting from a five-star experience. The restaurant does solid Azerbaijani dishes alongside international options, though I’d recommend venturing out to some of the local spots along the coast road for dinner – there are these incredible kebab places that locals frequent, and the taxi ride back is maybe ten minutes tops. Parking was never an issue, which is honestly a relief if you’re driving in Baku (and you’re braver than I am). The 7.3 rating makes sense to me – it’s a genuinely nice place with great location benefits, but it’s not quite hitting that luxury experience you might expect from the star rating and pricing.
