Metro City Hotel Overview
You know what? Metro City Hotel surprised me. I mean, when you’re walking down Fatali Khan Khoyski Avenue – which honestly sounds more intimidating than it actually is – you might almost miss this place if you’re not paying attention. It’s tucked between some business buildings at number 157, and there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about it.
The thing is, this area of Baku is actually perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying where locals live and work, not in some tourist bubble. You’re about a fifteen-minute walk from the Old City (Icherisheher), but far enough away that you won’t hear tour groups chattering outside your window at 7 AM. The metro station is close enough that you’ll use it, and there’s this little bakery around the corner that does incredible qutab – I probably ate there three times during my stay because, well, why wouldn’t you?
What struck me about Metro City is that it feels like they’re actually trying without trying too hard, if that makes sense. The lobby has this clean, modern vibe without being sterile, and the staff genuinely seemed to know the neighborhood. When I asked about getting to the Flame Towers (because obviously), the desk clerk didn’t just point vaguely – he drew me a little map showing the shortcut through the park that saves you about ten minutes of walking uphill. The rooms are solid four-star standard – nothing that’ll blow your mind, but the AC works properly (crucial in Baku summers), the shower has decent pressure, and honestly, the beds are more comfortable than I expected. I slept really well, which doesn’t always happen when I travel.
Here’s the thing though – and I mean this in the best way – this isn’t the kind of place that’s going to coddle you or anticipate your every need. It’s straightforward hospitality done right. The 7.4 rating makes sense because it’s good, genuinely good, without being fancy enough to hit those higher numbers that usually come with marble lobbies and turndown service. But you know what you’re getting, and what you’re getting works. The breakfast is decent (try the local honey), the wifi doesn’t cut out every five minutes, and when I needed to extend my checkout by a few hours, they just said “sure, no problem” without making it into this whole production. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want – a place that handles the basics really well so you can focus on exploring this incredible city instead of dealing with hotel drama.

What could be improved: The smell of the sewers! It was awful. Whole room was smelling of sewers. Room Service is good, staffs are friendly, food is very good especially I like the chef and his preparation is awesome
What could be improved: Rooms are not sound proof, we could hear sound from other rooms, breakfast is daily same, this should be some changes on daily basis.Clean, safe and great staff – Gurbirsingh from United Kingdom – 13 October 2023 (8/10)
Breakfast was god but limited options for vegetarians.
What could be improved: Main shortcoming was the absence of a"toaster":)Good – Marie from Czech Republic – 7 October 2023 (7/10)
The breakfast was great. The staff was very nice and helpful but didn't speak much English. We bought dinner twice and it was amazing. I really liked that I got fresh bottled water every day in the room.
What could be improved: Honestly, I wouldn't really label this a four star hotel, barely 3 stars, but I am used to European standards. The walls are very thin, so I could hear all the guests coming in, shower running in the next room, and the tv in the hallway. The fitness and pool did not look very clean or inviting, so I did not find the courage to try it. Overall, the hotel felt like its best days were over (broken mirror in the room, non-functioning light in the bathroom, showerhead falling apart, etc.). Also, they changed the opened unfinished soap every day, which did not feel necessary, and I see it as a bit wasteful.it was f#%$^£¥ EXCELLENT !! – V from Italy – 16 August 2023 (10/10)
– great customer service
– excellent food, in case you want to have dinner in the hotel
– woke up late for you breakfast? well, you can still have it your way, NO strange extra fees
– great steaming hot shower with good water pressure after a hard working day = pure HAPPINESS
What could be improved: the sink is a little bit smelly buy honestly … who cares?! I don't live in the hotel, I stay for the nightExceptional – Rajeev from Portugal – 10 June 2023 (10/10)
I had an excellent and very comfortable stay at Golden City Hotel. The staff were incredibly humble and polite, and even upgraded me to a better room at no additional cost when the one I had booked was unavailable. The breakfast was delicious and available even during times when there were few guests in the hotel. I was impressed with the hotel's amenities as they looked exactly like the pictures on the website. Although I did not use the fitness center, it was available for use.
I found Manager Faud to be very polite and accommodating. The hotel is ideally situated in a prime location, just 400 meters from Nariman Narimanov metro station and within walking distance of the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center. The staff were always polite, and I felt safe throughout my stay. The food served for lunch and dinner was both tasty and affordable.
Without hesitation, I would choose to stay at Golden City Hotel if I ever travel to Baku again. The hotel is a hidden gem, and I feel compelled to recommend it to others. I was surprised to read some negative reviews about this place, as my experience was nothing but positive.Good – Ahmed from Egypt – 7 May 2023 (7/10)
