InterContinental Baku by IHG Overview
You know what? I’ve stayed at quite a few InterContinentals around the world, but the one in Baku actually surprised me – and not just because of the stunning Caspian Sea views from most rooms. This place sits right in the heart of Sabayil, which honestly is exactly where you want to be if you’re trying to understand modern Baku. You’re literally a five-minute walk from the iconic Flame Towers (you can’t miss them – they light up the whole skyline at night), and the Old City with its ancient walls is close enough that you’ll find yourself wandering over there for evening strolls.
The hotel itself feels properly luxurious without being stuffy about it. I mean, the lobby’s impressive with all that marble and those soaring ceilings, but the staff actually remembers your name after day one, which you don’t always get at big chain hotels. The rooms are spacious – I had a corner suite that looked out over both the sea and the city, and honestly, watching the sunset paint those Flame Towers gold while sipping tea from the minibar was worth the trip alone. The beds are those crisp white linens you expect from a five-star, and the bathrooms have proper water pressure (trust me, this matters when you’ve been walking around Baku’s hilly streets all day). One small thing though – the AC can be a bit aggressive, so you might need to fiddle with it your first night.
What I really appreciated was how the hotel connects you to authentic Baku experiences without making you work for it. The concierge team knows their stuff – they pointed me toward this incredible local restaurant on Nizami Street that I never would’ve found otherwise, and they arranged a driver who actually spoke decent English for my day trip to Gobustan. The breakfast spread includes proper Azerbaijani options alongside the international stuff, so you can try dovga (this tangy yogurt soup that grows on you) without committing to a whole meal of unfamiliar food. Location-wise, you’re perfectly positioned – Fountain Square and all that buzzy nightlife is walkable, the carpet museum is practically next door if you’re into that sort of thing, and when you need a break from sightseeing, the hotel’s spa is actually worth the splurge. The pool area gets busy around 4 PM with families, but mornings are blissfully quiet. Honestly, for a city that’s changing as rapidly as Baku, staying somewhere that bridges the gap between international comfort and local character makes all the difference.

Everything was amazing. Location is phenomenal, walking distance from most places of interest. Metro station just across the street. Staff are very professional and helpful. Room cleaning was also at a great level. Spacious room with comfortable beds. Breakfast overall was very nice. Our room had a nice view of the flame towers in the distance.
What could be improved: Bread at breakfast did not feel fresh, which is a shame since Azerbaijan has amazing bread to offer. Didn't bother us much, but slight room for improvement.Na – Khalfan from United Arab Emirates – 10 June 2025 (8/10)
